I theorize that Nokia was either going to switch to Android or was on the verge of going bankrupt. (I suspect the latter: part of the deal included €1.5 billion in financing available to Nokia immediately, and it’s decidedly odd that Microsoft bought Asha but not the Nokia brand or maps; it’s as if they were keeping the price as low as possible).

And so, I would argue that this deal is not unlike the Motorola one, where I believe Google had its hand forced by Motorola’s threat to sue other Android OEM’s for all they were worth. Microsoft didn’t have a choice.

This quickly becomes a lengthy discussion, but fundamentally the innovation process is chaotic. It’s very similar to the process of artistic creation. The crisis in innovation comes from not having sufficient chaos. If Europe wants to preserve, sustain, nurture, and maintain it will do so at the expense of creative destruction. Nobody likes chaos but everybody wants innovation. Unfortunately they are concurrent things.

A stand-up comedian sells his show online for $5, global distribution, no artificial restrictions. Breaks even in 12 hours, and after three days, has made a profit of $200,000. This is a real-world example of why the big media companies and rights organizations stubbornly focus their efforts on fighting piracy and not improving their business model. They are nothing but dispensable middlemen. They are scared. And they should be.

If you take care of customers, shareholders will be drawn along for a very nice ride. The opposite is simply not true: if you try to take care of shareholders, customers don’t benefit and, ironically, shareholders don’t get very far either.
